Abstract
Twenty patients with endoscopically proven gastric ulcer and 14 with duodenal ulcer were admitted to the trial. All patients received Tripotassium Dicitrato Bismuthate (T.D.B.) for four weeks. The patients were ambulatory and no special dietary restrictions were introduced.
At the end of the trial, the patients (72.7% of gastric ulcer and 67.9% of ;duodenal ulcer) on T.D.B. showed complete relief of symptoms with a further cases (15.6% of gastric ulcer and 18.9% of duodenal ulcer) experiencing marked improvement.
Endoscopical examination showed complete healing in 75¡Æ0 of gastric ulcer patients on T.D.B., while significant reduction in ulcer size was seen in the 20%. Patients with duodenal ulcer showed complete healing in 78.6% of cases on T.D.B., with a further 21.4% exhibiting reduction in ulcer size.
It is concluded that T.D.B. is an effective agent for the treatment of peptic ulcer. However, the drug causes dark discoloration of the stools and this should be borne in mined when considering the possibility of the presence of intestinal bleeding.
